NZ Penguin

There’s a working sheep farm on the Otago Peninsula in New Zealand that is also the natural home to a colony of Yellow Eyed Penguins.  Apparently, the farmer watched the little guys come up out of the sea every night and decided to set up a sanctuary for them.  In order to fund the project he constructed hidden blinds above the beach so that guided tourists can visit without disturbing the Penguins.  It was awesome.

I did the last tour of the evening, before heading back to Dunedin the tour guide/van driver had to go around and lock the gates so that the sheep wouldn’t wander off, she left us in the van with a tape of “traditional kiwi music.”  The tape consisted of 1 Maori song, Crowded House and all other incantation of the Finn Brothers.

My thoughts go out to the folks in Christchurch, NZ.

Hong Kong, Big Buddha

Big Buddha, Po Lin Monastery, Hong Kong

If you were going to Hong Kong I remember this day trip as fun.  We visited The Big Buddah and had lunch at The Po Lin Monastery.   The Big Buddha is indeed very big and impressive but I was also drawn to the smaller statues which were making offerings and surrounded his pedestal.

My theme for today is Serenity Now so I’ve chosen this image to be my first post in a series of posts focusing on the images stored on my photo site.

Shameless Plug of a Friend

What a fantastic week my friend Otto is having. His work is featured in the double page spread leading off the Sports Illustrated best photos of the year – on the newsstand now.

And you can now buy a limited edition lithography from his U2 360 collection on U2.com.

I’ve always loved Otto’s style, he manages to captures the moment highlighting either joy or the reverence his subject has for his pursuit be it musical or athletic. And I’ve always especially loved Otto’s concert shots where he highlights the relationship between the artist and the audience.

Go Otto!
